MELROSE QUARTET at Nailers – November, 24 Friday -  8:00pm

Nominated for Best Group, 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.  The Melrose Quartet are truly an all-round folk act, with both tight a cappella harmony and energy-packed instrumentals.  They comprise leading English musicians NANCY KERR (2015 BBC Folk Singer of the Year), JAMES FAGAN, JESS & RICHARD ARROWSMITH with twin fiddles, guitar and bouzouki, melodeon and four strong voices.  The band present a bold take on old and new English songs and tunes, with a powerful treatment of traditional material alongside some of the best modern song-writing in the folk world. They reliably delight and tantalise their audiences with the infectious warmth and sparkle these four seasoned musicians feel when they unite.  In concert, Melrose Quartet perform a diverse repertoire, featuring music from their acclaimed debut album ‘50 Verses’ alongside new works destined for their new CD due for release early in 2017. There are carousing chorus songs, lively dance tunes, ancient stories and modern pieces written in celebration of everything from weddings & birthdays to issues that affect all of our 21st century lives. This is music for everybody.  Melrose Quartet are known for their outstanding workshops ranging from harmony singing to accompaniment, and they also can offer The Melrose Ceilidh Band, with the addition of Nigel Holmes on Bass. This is a ceilidh with a difference, as the band use singing as well as instruments for the dance music, to great effect. “...all in all an inspired ensemble so obviously playing for joy” Martin Simpson

Green Exchange  with Transition Belper.

Saturday Nov 25th 2017 at 10.00 am

Number 28 Belper, 28 Market Place, Belper.

Christmas preparations start early at Transition Belper’s November Green Exchange with Richard Bett, Anne Clark, Kim Kerry, Sue MacFarlane and Jo Kirk, all leading workshops to help you make festive decorations and gift tags. In addition there are the usual stalls featuring garden produce, book swaps and our energy advice surgery. Why not book a thermal image survey of your house for the cold winter months?

November's event also features Rachel Evans, Great Vegan Bake Off 2017 Finalist, in the capacity of Guest Baker. Rachel is providing, at cost, various biscuits and bars to sell at the Café. (Thanks go out to Mark Creed for arranging the visit).

Rachel, who lives in Derby, is a Psychology PhD Student and recently featured on BBC Radio Derby and in the Derby Telegraph. She recently won Best Vegan Blog 2017 for her blog: Healthy and Psyched. Hopefully she will feature her Transition Belper visit, giving us some great exposure.

Rachel's visit is especially timely, as November is Vegan Month. This month, Nailed will be running the kitchen to raise funds for Belper's local community news outlet, and will also be preparing some additional vegan fare.

KUNST 15 - an accent waiting to happen – Saturday Nov 25th 2017 at 7.00 pm

Kunst Gallery Belper, The Old Nail Shed, Campbell Street, Belper.

KGB welcome the writer, actor, musician, curator, teacher, adventurer Richard Strange to the Unstables Bar for KUNST 15 - an accent waiting to happen. Richard was the founder and front man of seminal mid-1970s protopunk art rock band Doctors of Madness and has been a monstrous force in the British arts for over 5 (five) decades. Check his wiki....a wonderful creator of all things good in the world.

He's leaving the comfort of the smoke and travelling up the M1 to Derbyshire after a 42 year hiatus, he was last in Derby in 1975 with the Doctors of Madness who performed at the old college (now the university). So, come gather for an intimate night of entertainment in the form of chat, imagery, music and film (and any old question we can throw at this true gentleman of the arts).

And if that ain't enough, supporting Richard will be the improvised duo Sturt & Woodcock, no strangers to Belper, Dave & Julian will bring their very own brand of sublime bass and bewildering wordage to the shed in what is likely to be a night of stupifying entertainment in the heart of Belper.

four whole pounds on the door for this un. We gotta pay um.

Blood Donation Session at The Whitemoor Centre on Sun 26th November 2017 from 9.35am To 3.30pm

Giving blood is something that we hear a lot about but how many of us actually take the step to roll up our sleeves and donate? The Whitemoor Centre, 100 John O'Gaunts Way, Belper, Derbyshire. DE56 0DB

There are two sessions, 9.35 – 12.35 and 13.50 – 15.30

Giving blood is something that we hear a lot about but how many of us actually take the step to roll up our sleeves and donate? Everyday, blood enables doctors to save the lives of patients in emergencies; to help mothers and premature babies survive childbirth; to help patients beat certain cancers; and to make planned operations possible.  But blood is only there if people give it...  People like you! NHS Blood & Transplant needs to collect 7,000 donations of blood a day to ensure patients get the lifesaving treatments that they need. Giving blood is much easier than most people think.  Simply call to book your appointment or drop in on the day; the donation itself only takes around 10 minutes and in this time you can help save or improve the lives of up to 3 people! Where else can you save a life and get a cup of tea as well?

Most people can be donors as long as they are between their 17th and 65th birthday, weigh more than 50kg (7 stone 12 lbs) and are in general good health. For more information or to register, Call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk to register
