Leader: Adrian Farmer.On the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, discover the hidden heritage that has survived and the stories from Belper’s time during the two World Wars, with some surprises on the way. Two-mile walk with some slopes and uneven surfaces

Belper’s Wartime Secret Walk

This circular walk looks at Belper's little-known wartime secrets. During the Second World War, Belper played a key role in the Allied victory. However, as those "in the know" never really talked about what they were doing, many people today have no idea of just how important a place it was. Even many of those living in the town at the time have no idea of what was happening right under their noses. This walk tells the story of the secret wartime work that took place in Belper and visits the sites involved.

Distance: 3.5 miles. Duration: 2.5 hours. Price: £5.00

Start point: Shortlands Car Park, Chesterfield Road (opposite St Peter's Church),

Our regular monthly meeting for September will look at old Belper maps that have recently been digitised by the DRO. Some of the volunteers who helped will talk about their favourite maps from the project.

Alport Heights 3 x 1.8 Mile Relay Race

Race Distance: 3 x 1.8 miles  2019-09-04 at 6.30pm/18.30  Midlands

Race Address:

Belper Amateurs Cricket Ground, Sandyford Lane, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 2RD

Details:

This relay replaces the former Malt Shovel Relay but is over approximately the same distance but there are no hills on the left hand loop.

The start and finish are within the grounds of the cricket ground but the remainder of the lap is on public roads. There is a gentle uphill section after the first left hand turn into Sandhall Lane but there is a good long downhill stretch before turning into the cricket ground at the end of each lap.

There are toilets, changing, bar and other non-alcoholic drinks available.

The entry fee is £12 per team if entered by 12noon on Thursday or £15 if entered on the night from 5.30pm. Entries should be sent to my mobile - 077 47 77 62 33 - to include and email address and the name of the team(s)

Belper’s Lost Industries Walk

This circular walk around Belper looks at the various lost industries of the world's first cotton mill town. It begins with the cotton mills built by the Strutt family at the very beginning of the Industrial Revolution, with a slight diversion to include the picturesque weir on the river, followed by a look at the houses the family built for their workers. From there, the walk looks at the nail-making industry that pre-dated the arrival of the cotton mills, plus the other industries which once provided employment for the town, including hosiery, confectionery, chemicals and engineering.

Distance: 2.8 miles. Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours. Price: £5.00

Start point: The Triangle (junction of A6 Bridge Street and A517 Bridgefoot),

Belper, Derbyshire. – Start time: 10:00am.

Sunday 8th (2pm) Water Power in Belper – Past and Present Walk

Start: The Bandstand, Belper River Gardens (DE56 1BE).

Leader: Ian Jackson.A walk around the water ways of the Belper Mill complex, seeing how the Strutt’s used water from the River Derwent to power their cotton mills. It includes lots of newly discovered information about the weirs, the water wheels and turbines. Also discussing the Hydro Power currently being produced on site and along the Derwent Valley.

For artists to meet and bring along work in all the popular mediums - oil, watercolour, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, and pencil as well as for people with an interest in art. All abilities are catered for and beginners are encouraged to join to further their ambitions.

Facilitated by local artist Ruth Gray advice given as required and the sessions are a mix of directed and non-directed as needed by the group.

Maximum participants are six, booking for the three two-hour sessions is in advance, taken through Creartii: cost £40 for block of three sessions.
