A Twist in the Tale - Belper Ropemakers Heritage WalkOverview

New for 2025!

Whether at work or at home, rope was an essential part of life in times past. Join us to hear all about how and where it was made in Belper and the family that made it. More than five generations of the Kirklands worked the ropewalk owned by the Strutts, and built a strong business based on Bridge Street, becoming an important part of Belper's community.

This walk has been designed to be suitable for people with limited mobility and lasts one and a half hours with a rest stop part way through, finishing with the opportunity to purchase refreshments whilst you sit and hear the story's end.  Unfortunately this walk is not suitable for mobility scooters due to the nature of the surface and a couple of steps.

Germany was in at the very beginning of the car revolution and the VW Beetle is unlikely to be surpassed in terms of numbers of a single model produced. So Beetles and Scirrocos, Mercedes and Audi : this is your time! Join us for our special themed German Car Day on Saturday 19th July.

We are calling all owners of German cars to join us for our very special Great British Masters of the Marque in association with Wera Tools event at Great British Car Journey.

We will be joined again by the Volkswage Scirocco Register

Discounted entry of just £10 per person (save £8.50 for each person on usual on the day price) is available on advance tickets purchased in advance for ALL occupants of ANY German marque attending on the day. The special discounted entry price includes full access to the Great British Car Journey interactive museum, cafe and facilities.

Every car will also receive a commemorative metal plaque on the day, plus the chance to take part in our themed Great British Masters of the Marque awards in association with Wera Tools. All entrants will have the chance to win a glass trophy or Wera Tools sets.

Step back in time to the Inns and Taverns of the Town to discover their historic past and entertaining stories.  

This easy one mile walk includes stopping inside a couple of the pubs for an opportunity to purchase refreshments.

 Meet at 2pm at The Talbot pub, Bridgefoot. An hour and a half approximately.

Available dates: Sunday 13th April, Sunday 8th June, Sunday 27th July, Sunday 5th October and Sunday 21 December. All start at 2pm.

It wasn’t just about buying your Lotus as a kit to avoid paying purchase tax , as Clan Ginetta, Dutton and hundreds of other small volume producers were to prove. The car park may smell of uncured fibreglass resin but individuality will be much in evidence! Celebrate the Kit Car with us!

We are calling all owners of Kit cars to join us for our special Great British Masters of the Marque in association with Wera Tools event at Great British Car Journey.

Discounted entry of just £10 per person (save £8.50 for each person on usual on the day price) is available for advance tickets for ALL occupants of ANY qualifying vehicle attending on the day. The special discounted entry price includes full access to the Great British Car Journey interactive museum, cafe and facilities.
