Harnessing the power of the Derwent - Milford and Makeney Heritage Walk 2nd August

OverviewBELPER 250

This is the first year Dr Ian Jackson has led a walk around the waterways of Milford and Makeney for the Belper North Mill Trust. The River Derwent powered watermills, of many types, for hundreds of years before the Strutts arrived in the 1780s. They further developed the weirs and waterways for their textile mill, bleaching and dyeworks and iron foundry in Milford, including the early introduction of hydroelectric turbines for lighting and power c.1900. In addition to a rich history, including patent disputes in the 1500's, hydroelectric power is still being produced today, using a new turbine installed in 2020 (a challenging project).

This is an easy largely flat walk of 2.8 km (1.7 miles) alongside the river lasting about 2 hours.

Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome on this walk.

HOBBY DONKEY DERBY – BELPER 250

The Hobby Donkey Derby will be a chance to display home-made hobby donkeys, as we remember the traditional 19th century Belper Donkey Race. The hobby donkeys will be made at workshops in the run-up to the event, but entrants will also be welcome to bring anything vaguely hobby-like to ride on the day.

Children and adult riders will have chance to display their hobby donkeys in the ring from 2pm. Prizes will be awarded for the ‘best in show’ Hobby Donkeys covering a number of themes. If there are any other varieties of donkey, ‘pantomime donkey’ for instance, there will be a prize for ‘the best non-hobby donkey’!  Venue: Belper Memorial Gardens  –  Time: 2pm – 4pm

PRESERVING BELPER’S INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

A project coordinated by Belper Historical Society (BHS), aiming to engage with communities in and around Belper who may have relatives who worked in the many Belper factories and have treasures hidden away in cupboards and dusty attics. Volunteer BHS ‘curators’ will help to collect, organise and preserve factory-related photographs, documents and artefacts, creating virtual scrapbooks.

Once catalogued and digitised, original materials will be offered to the Derbyshire Record Office for long term storage. Donated artefacts will be added to the secure BHS store, to be used in future research and exhibitions.

A BHS team will attend the monthly Belper Market, to promote the project, offer advice on materials being organised before donation, and collect donated materials. Later market dates for 2026 are 11th April, 9th May, 13th June, 11th July, 8th August, 12th September, 10th October, 14th November and 12th December.

WALK: BULLSMOOR, IT’S HISTORY AND SONGS – BELPER 250

Join Sarah Hinds and Adrian Farmer for a two-mile history walk around Bullsmoor. Sarah will perform unaccompanied songs about Bullsmoor. While campaigning to save Bullsmoor from housing developments Sarah learnt all kinds of interesting and unexpected things about the area. She wrote the ‘Bullsmoor blog’ and created the ‘Bullsmoor song project’. In the 2019 Belper Arts Festival, her dad Colin Hinds led a walk across Bullsmoor to share some of these stories. Colin was an enthusiastic hiker and creator of walks around Derbyshire. This walk is in his memory.

World of the Workers; Strutt Community Tour - including access to a Cluster House

OverviewBELPER 250

The Community, built from 1785 onwards to house the workers in the Strutt family cotton spinning mills is considered to be the oldest surviving textile workers’ community in England – in Belper, the oldest cotton spinning town in the world. It is just a short walk to the mills, a route that the workers would have taken six days a week for their 12-hour working day.

Investigate the Short Rows, walk up Long Row hearing the stories of the Community and its residents. See for yourself why Long Row is once seen and never forgotten. Why did the Strutt family need to build so many houses? What did the children do? What did their mothers and fathers do? Visit the Unitarian Chapel learning about Jedediah Strutt, the founder of the Strutt family cotton empire and the role that Unitarianism played in the Industrial Revolution. Nailers, framework knitters, cheviners and navvies all feature in the history of the Community. Hear what part they played in the growth of Belper and how the Strutts transformed the lives of their mill workers and the nailing hamlet of Belper into a thriving hub of the emerging cotton textile industry.

Explains the impact of slavery on the Industrial Revolution and in relation to Belper + the development of the Railways.

Includes a visit to the unique Cluster House, courtesy of the present owner.

Please note: some streets in this older part of Belper are steep and uneven, so this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs. The tour lasts about 2 hours.

Getting Crabs, Throwing Stones and Other Offences: 19th Century Trespassers in Milford - Talk at No.28 - 30th August 6pmBELPER 250

Overview

A notebook kept by the Milford Nightwatchmen in the 1830s was handed over to Belper Historical Society in 2022. After transcribing the book, it was possible to identify the people involved, the places that attracted trespassers and the punishments meted out to offenders. The talk shows a fascinating and very detailed picture of a different side of local life.

This talk by Jane Whitaker begins at 6pm on 30th August at No.28 on Belper Market Place as part of the Belper 250 anniversary celebrations.

All proceeds go towards the Belper North Mill Trust.
